Antique Skeleton Room Keys Lot and Brochure Plainfield Inn Vermont Advertising Collectibles Keys Travel Memorabilia

Collection of WONDERFUL antique skeleton hotel keys and their fobs from the Plainfield Inn in Plainfield Vermont plus the original promo brochure. Boy if these keys can talk!

There are different room numbers on the keys and the postage stated on the key fobs to return a key was 2 cents. Postage was 2 cents in 1885 and again in 1917. The Inn was built by Gameliel Washburn and opened in the mid 1830's. It was not called the Plainfield Inn back then or in the early 1900's and it burned to the ground in 1914 and it was sold, fixed, and re-opened 8 months later in 1914 under a the new name the Bancroft Inn. So my guess is that these keys and brochure are dated somewhere between mid 1900's and 1914.

I want to thank Susan with the Plainfield Historical society for sending me the info and getting to the bottom of this mystery. She told me that the building is still standing today and in still in great shape. Although it is no longer used as an Inn and the Inn probably folded in the late 1950s-60s.

There aren't any dates on the brochure. Just the manager's name which was George L. Morse.

The brochure states that it has both "American" and "European" rates . You could stay for $3.00 to $5.00 per day or $21.00 a week.

But if you wanted a room with running water, it was an extra $1.00 per person. A room with a private bath was and extra $1.50. A chicken or steak dinner was .75 cents! Breakfast and lunch was .50 cents! Wow! A private bathtub was more expensive than a steak! LOL!

The key fobs are hard leather? I believe. One has a sticker on the back and one has some tape residue on the back. I showed both front and backs. Keys are embossed with Sargent at the top and a number. Some of them have some rust.

Such wonderful antique decor for your home. You can get a wooden box and put hooks inside and hang the keys. OR maybe this is a souvenir for a relative who has stayed here. Or maybe you have visited Plainfield Vermont or live there. At any rate, these are a great rare find.
